Kalasin University is a newly-established university by the Royal Thai Government announced in the Royal Gazette issue 132, Section 86A on September 8, 2015. Kalasin University was established by merging Kalasin Rajabhat University and the Kalasin campus of Rajamangala University of Technology Isan. While the former was specialized in Education and Social Sciences, Sciences, Agriculture and Technology were the specialized areas of the latter. As a result, Kalasin University is thus a combination of these two paradigms of education. According to section 6 of the Kalasin University Act 2015, the university is an educational institute providing knowledge and expertise in professions and advanced professions with the purpose of providing education, promoting research for developing knowledge and technology, providing academic services for local communities and society, providing educational opportunities for people, preserving  religion, the arts, cultures, and sports, providing support to government activities, participating in local development projects , and preserving the environment.

     After the merger, Kalasin University comprised of 9 temporary faculties. The actual structure was being planned and considered by the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Education, and the cabinet of Thai government. In October 2018, the new structure of Kalasin University was officially announced. The new structure consists of 9 faculties which are the Faculty of Education and Educational Innovation, the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Faculty of Science and Health Technology, the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, and the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology.

     Kalasin University is active in four locations in Kalasin Province which are the In-Town area which consist of 3 faculties namely the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, and the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology, Na Mon area which consists of 3 faculties that are the Faculty of Education and Educational Innovation, the Faculty of Liberal Arts, and the Faculty of Science and Health Technology, the Phu Sing Research and Development Center which is where plantation and farming are practiced, and Kamalasai District area.

Kalasin University offers 51 bachelor’s degree programs in science and technology. For the graduate program, Kalasin University has 7 programs available in M.B.A., M.Sc., M.P.H., and M.Ed. to offer.

     Kalasin University values the importance of international cooperation and therefore Kalasin University has already signed 11 Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with universities in ASEAN countries, Taiwan, China, and Indonesia. After these MOUs were signed, academic and cultural exchange activities were organized such as a Cultural Exchange Program and International Internship with Hue University (Vietnam), a 3-month Short Course Training Program with Guiyang University (China), a Joint Degree Program for diploma and bachelor’s degree levels is being negotiated with Nanning College of Vocational and Technology (China) and currently the co-host university in The First National and International Conference of Kalasin University 2019: Recent Innovation of Sciences and Social Sciences for Sustainability (Laos, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, and Indonesia).
